"i thought the party was..." or "i thought the party is"

Hello,

1- I thought the party was at room 12.

2- I thought the party is at room 12.

Which is correct? What is the difference in meaning?

both are possible, but, in number 2, the speaker wishes to emphasise that the situation desribed (the party going on at room 12) still exists.

I feel I should note that it is exceedingly rare to hear "thought (that) ... is ...", in spite of the theoretical possibilities for emphasis that you mention here.

I have no reason to doubt your words, but I will try to find some practical considerations in support of those 'theoretical possibilities'.

I know this wasn't the point of the quesiton, but shouldn't it be "in room 12"?
