I thought that things [would go back] to normal

I thought that things would go back to normal between us after the duck incident.

The protagonist had been in a good relationship with someone.

Then their relationship went bad and it didn't get better.

He thinks things would go back to normal between us after the duck incident and he knows things din't.

Here, I think the tense of the subordinate clause should precede that of the main clause because things didn't yet go back to normal, so not "will" but "would."

And in the orginal text, the tense of the main clause is the past.

So for tense agreement, I think the verbs "would go" should be "would have gone."

So I was wondering why it is "would go," not "would have gone."

Thank you in advance for your help.
