"I thought if I had money, I would buy the car"

"If I had money, I would buy the car" means I do not have money now, so I will not buy the car. ( the opposite of the current state)

"I thought if I had money, I would buy the car" is just the past of "I think if I have money, I will buy the car" and it is not the opposite of the current state, right?

What do you think?

Thank you so much in advance.

I am asking this because of this sentence in the movie.
I thought if I wanted it enough, I could show everybody that Mike Wazowski is something special.
