I thought I heard/had heard

What's the difference between:
I thought I heard something
and
I thought I had heard something
?

I think that in the first one, the thinking and the hearing happened at the same time. I guess the present version would be I think I hear something.
In the second one, I think the hearing happened before the thinking (I think I heard something)

Now, let's say you were alone at home and you heard something.
Would it be correct to say Hmm, that's strange. I thought I had heard something. or does it have to be I thought I heard something? Maybe both are correct? Thank you very much!
