"I think you are projecting..."

One person said. "No, no, I'm not.", the other protested and went on to defend himself.

This is a scene from a movie. My question is, what does the phrase "you are projecting" mean? Sorry, this is as much context I can give.

The link does explain perfectly well the "psychological state" of the character in the scene. So "projecting" is terminological (in psychology) then, as opposed to being a general term? Unless the speaker or the receiver knows its Freudian origin, the phrase would not have been understood? Yes?
