I think this is incorrect

I came across this quotation online. I believe the Past Perfect is not used correctly here.

"And after the smoke cleared, the man with the netted head had stollen the comb right from the hive" ~ Scary bedtime ...

I agree that it is not quite right. I believe it is intended to mean "it became apparent that the man with the netted head had stolen ...", or something like that.

Spelling: stolen.

I think it's the 'after' that's the real problem, not the past perfect. If we change that to 'when', I think the sentence is acceptable.
