Hi I'd say that there are two senses in which 'remember' can be used The first use refers to a single act that takes place at a moment in time: - I just remembered that I have to buy the cake The second describes the ability of someone to recall something. They don't have to be doing it at any particular time: - I remember what happened last night A technical way of saying this is that the first use is dynamic and the second is stative. It's good to know this, as there are some tenses that you can't use with the stative sense: I see a woman stop in front of a cake shop and her expression changes: - She is remembering to buy the cake However, this present continous tense won't work with the stative sense: - How do we know she has done her history homework?

  • - [Correct] - She remembers the dates of all the battles - [Incorrect] - She is remembering the dates of all the battles The last would only be correct if we were actually witnessing the person recite the dates as we are speaking Hope this helps, Dave
