I think it's not a subletter

How do you call the person to whom a tenant sublets an apartment?
Is it only a legal term or is it a word widely known by everybody?
If it were strictly legal, I would like to know if there is a popular term for it.

Top answer

"subtenant". There is also "sublessee", which sounds more technical/legal.

Should be what do you call? This is a common mistake by non-native speakers.
