I suspect I had become/became resigned to my fate.

Hi all

Could you please tell me the difference between these two sentences? Even though, I don't have a reason to use the past perfect as I am not referencing one action before another, somehow I feel as though the second sentence is correct. Here, I am recounting the fact that at one point in the past I had this thought of resigning myself to my fate.

I suspect I became resigned to my fate.
I suspect I had become resigned to my fate.

Thank you.

Best wishes
