"I suppose Sandra is my best friend. we ring each other most evenings."

Hello all,
What does 'suppose' mean here? Does the writer have doubts about Sandra being her/his best friend?
"I suppose Sandra is my best friend. we ring each other most evenings."

Top answer

Yes, it suggests that the writer had to think about it, rather than the answer being immediately obvious. Maybe the writer wasn't immediately sure whether his/her best friend was Sandra or someone else, or maybe he/she harbours doubts about whether "best friend" is a useful designation, or a designation relevant to him/her.
