Hi T. Luk, No story, no known author. The word 'smell' is less derogatory than the word 'stink', so that the speaker is indicating that, of the similar odors emitted by both bodies, he considers his own less offensive.

Hi T. Luk,

No story, no known author.

The word 'smell' is less derogatory than the word 'stink', so that the speaker is indicating that, of the similar odors emitted by both bodies, he considers his own less offensive.

Another example: 'I'm financially embarrassed, you're broke.'

There may also be a play on the word 'smell' in this context.

"Smell" is both an intransitive verb and a noun.

I think it may mean that the speaker has the ability to smell, and the audience has a body odour problem.

This sounds like the beginning of a "self-serving conjugation".
I smell. You stink. He reeks to high heaven.

Other self-serving conjugations:
I am a Renaissance Man. You are a jack-of-all-trades. He is having an identity crisis.
I invest. You speculate. He gambles.

Probably the most famous is:
I am firm. You are stubborn. He is pig-headed.

Hi, I have read from another source that the quote is from Dr. Johnson.
