I see your future in the cards

'I see your future in the cards.'
She told us she ---- our future in the cards.

A) saw
B) had seen

The normal reported speech tense shift rule says the simple present changes to the simple past. Therefore, A is correct, but I wonder how strict this rule is because the sentence sounds meaningful with B, too. Does the initial sentence being in the simple present forces us to choose A, does it have anything to do with our tense choice? Thank you.
