I saw him run away from the car and as I wasn't wearing my shoes I couldn't chase him.

I saw him run away from the car and as I wasn't wearing my shoes I couldn't chase him.

Please punctuate this sentence for me, and please tell me the reasons.

I saw him run away from the car, and as I wasn't wearing my shoes, I couldn't chase him. I used a comma before and because a complex sentence follows. I used a comma after shoes because I always place a comma after introductory adverbial clauses ( as I wasn't wearing my shoes ).

  • Really, I use commas in these cases to improve the flow of the sentence.

I completely understand the sentence. I would like to have more information on the first comma, though. Is the first comma acting a separator between two independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction? Please explain it in a simple manner. I am no expert.

Thanks a lot. You are great source of knowledge =)

I saw him run away from the car, and as I wasn't wearing my shoes, I couldn't chase him.

The conjunction joins a dependent clause followed by an independent clause:

As I wasn't
