I said that/I told you

I'm just wondering, after I said that/I told you, what type of tenses should be used?

- i said that i didn't want to go
- i said that i don't want to go

- she that he loves him
- she that he loved him

Top answer

I said that I didn't want to go. -- These are the usual way natives say these: the subordinate verb regresses with the reporting verb. I said that I don't want to go.

  • I said that I didn't want to go.
  • -- These are the usual way natives say these: the subordinate verb regresses with the reporting verb.
  • I said that I don't want to go.
  • / She said that she loves him.
  • -- You may also use these if you still don't want to go and she still loves him.
