Is #1 American English?

Is #2 British English?

2. I remember his playing the piano. -- I remember the piano playing that he did.

#2 is losing ground to #1 in popular usage, but I think the Brits are hanging on to it with more determination.

Yes. I think MOST people use #1 even in the UK, but I've heard #2 used by some intellectuals, especially older English ones. I'm sure they have their reasons for this, but whatever they are, few other people seem to care about them!

If I wanted to start with "I remember HIS", I would say "I remember HIS playing OF the piano".
