It is forecasted that shortly, Artificial intelligence or A.I will take place of teachers in the classroom. I fully disagree with this statement because of a huge difference in the role of humans and technology in the teaching and education field. Another replacement for the tradition face-to-face teaching is remote teaching, which is increasingly more popular nowadays.
In the modern world, we can experience how both the man and the technology factor play important parts in how students are taught. As a matter of fact that such innovations as A.I facilitate the teaching progress, therefore making it easier, more effective and more creative. However, these machines cannot replace teachers in the classroom since they are just created to be assistants. Teachers are more than just a means to transfer ideas, knowledge, and algorithms. They make connections and build relationships. They can focus on the mental side of students, identify weaknesses and strengths as well as give students emotional supports. None of these things can be done by a machine working based on man-made algorithms and analyzing given data.
To make the most of the recent technology advancements, rather than completely replace humans with machines, we can shift to one alternative to the traditional face-to-face way of teaching: remote teaching. People who don’t have enough time to attend the University, or want to learn something that is taught in another country can consider signing up online courses. These courses can easily be found on the Internet and mostly available at a much more affordable price or even completely free. Another advantage is that since they usually take place via Skype, Google Hangouts or videos on Youtube, websites and social networks, people can get access to them anywhere, anytime they want. These online courses are often shorter than normal offline ones as well. For instance, IBM is having an online course on Data Science, which only requires 12 hours and completely free. Courses like that are great opportunities for people lacking condition to go to school. They can even earn degrees and certificates that worth the same as the ones earned from offline schools.
In conclusion, teachers cannot be replaced by any form of technology, even the A.I. Their roles in teaching are significant and irreplaceable since they can provide students “real human connection” and take care of them, both physically and mentally. However, we can take advantage of the upcoming technology developments by focusing more on developing remote teaching, such a great method that can take the role of traditional face-to-face teaching and provide more chances for people to get access to education.
