My family Photograph

Photographs have a special value in our lives. People want to have photographs that will remind them in the future how things were in the past, or sometimes we want share experiences, wonderful times, special celebrations and meaningful holidays as well. Robert Root, editor of Captioning and Capturing the Past, describes photographs as open windows into the past. While looking a photograph for my guidance class, I found one that made me feel proud of my family. This photograph was taken four years ago in my quinceañera in Peru. I found it really interesting and special at the same time.

In the photograph, you can see a big happy family all together celebrating a special event for one of them. They are lined up and looking at the camera. It seems to be one of those glamorous birthday parties because you can see many balloons and decoration designs all over the place; actually, they are all pink and white. There is a big radio speaker in the top right-hand corner. There is a square table cover with a soft white tablecloth. It has a birthday cake on it with a beautiful doll on the top. If you look on the wall behind them, you can observe a white board that seems to be smooth to the touch. It is decorated with two elaborated designs of pink swans in both sides and a big pink heart in the middle that signs “ Mis 15 años ”.

In this photo, I was celebrating my quinceañera. A quinceañera is a celebration for young ladies who become fifteen years old and are from a Hispanic background. It is similar to a sweet sixteen party; only it celebrates becoming 15, not 16. I can recognize my uncles, aunts, cousins, my mom and my sister in the picture. However, someone who is not in the picture is my dad because he said he does not like to be photographed.
Photographs provide opportunities for personal explanation and emotional manifestations of memory. This photograph shows my mom really happy and proud of me. My mom in the photo has a face that resembles my personality in many ways. Her head is round a little bit narrow in the bottom. Her face looks more oval than mine is. She has a straight nose and her mouth seems to be closed showing her thin lips. She has a short light brown hair, actually since she got married my dad. She also has small, round brown eyes. Although the photo was taken four years ago, my mom is wearing a long navy dress that can be worn for women today in our society. This dress seems to be made of heavy silk that shapes her body really well. She is also wearing a short blouse with two short sleeves.

Photographs might bring memories from the experience and assist in the process of understanding the present. This photograph reminds me when my family and I were in our country, every Christmas making delicious food and sharing beautiful gifs for everyone in the family. There are people in the photograph that I no longer see for many reasons.

This photograph reflects one of the most special days in my whole life. When I see the photo today, it brings back good memories in my mind. This photo makes me feel very sad when I see it, four years later, because I am far away from my family now. Well, I think it is going to take me many years to see all my family together again. I hope to be in touch with them soon.
