I read this particular sentence online

I read this particular sentence online:

It's less the fact that the individual steps are high, than that they're shallow-- not enough room for the whole shoe to fit on each one,

Would you say that this is the correct version?

It's not so much the fact that the individual steps are high, as it is the fact that they're shallow.

Top answer

The first version is better, but rather clumsy. individual steps are high, as that they're shallow". However, what an English speaker would say is: "It's not so much the fact that the individual steps are high, it is more that they're shallow".

The first version is better, but rather clumsy. The second version is even clumsier, but could be improved by saying "....individual steps are high, as that they're shallow". However, what an English speaker would say is:
"It's not so much the fact that the individual steps are high, it is more that they're shallow".
