I read a book yesterday.

When somebody said, 'I read a book yesterday.', Did he mean that he had read the whole book yesterday or that he possibly had read only a part of the book?

Top answer

Either of the two is possible. However, if you ask me, I would say "He didn't finish reading the book"

Both interpretations are possible.

If he uses the past progressive tense, "I was reading a book yesterday," It's still possible that he finished it, but less likely. At least, he is not trying to give you the impression that he finished it.

With simple past, he may be trying to give you that impression.

If you think it needs more explanation, you can give more explanation.

What more would you like to explain?
