"I paid 5 dollars altogether."

"I paid 5 dollars altogether."

Here in the sentence, altogether modifies paid or 5 dollars?

Thank you so much as usual and have a good day.

In my opinion, the adverb "altogether" is a "sentential adverb," modifying the whole clause, "I paid five dollars."

I think 'paid'. Others may think '$5'. I doubt there is a definitive answer.

I agree that there may not be a definitive answer. For me, it's a tie between 5 dollars and sentential adverb.
