I never could resist ...

Hi

A woman was talking to the man. She was saying him of something he didn't believe in. And she wanted to tell about these things other people however he told her it would be unwise cause nobody would believe her. No one would support her opinion. The woman nevertheless wanted to reveal what she knew.

He laughed. ‘Do you know, I was on the brink of saying, I hope you are right. You see I’m on the verge of

schizophrenia. I never could resist the little David facing up to Goliath. And you haven’t even got a sling. I must

ask you one more question and then I’ll take you home. Tell me truthfully. Do you think that I am involved in all

this nonsense?’

Do you think he says he's on the verge of schizophrenia because he was willing to believe her?

Does it mean: I always admired David who faced Goliath but he at least had a sling and you have nothing (she had no evidence, so no one would believe her)

This seems to fall into the category of metaphor. Your interpretation is as good as mine. My take is that by schizophrenia, he means that he can't make up his mind.
