One of the major conflicts in this novel is hatred that Curley feels toward Lennie. From the very first time that Lennie was introduced to him by George, he feels overpowered by how big he is. Immediately he started to show him his dreadful behaviour, and he was taking the advantage of it because he is the boss son. On the ranch only Curley has a wife, and he warns Lennie and George to stay away from her. Furthermore, Curley's wife was lonely and feel controlled by her husband, she runs to the bunk house and seeking for the companion. As soon as she gets there, she started to flirt, George alerts Lennie to stay away from her. However, she showed up second time, and this time George wasn't there to stop Lennie. He goes ahead and touches her, then she starts to scream; Lennie scared and accidentally kills her. The main reason of conflict between these characters is loneliness. Generally speaking every one becomes lonely once in a while but in Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men", he illustrates the loneliness of ranch life in the early 1930's and shows how people are driven to try and find friendship in order to escape from loneliness.
