Considering coastal tourism is an important economic activity in the Ko Chang. The attraction of the coast is the relatively high recreational value attached to tourism activities. The management of each foreseeable use toward coastal resources may help local governments to estimate carefully against theirs greater benefits from coastal resource uses and protection. This study aims to investigate the potential of the travel cost method in measuring the social benefits derived from three beaches in the Ko Chang marine park. To this end, the truncated Poisson (TP) and truncated negative-binomial (TNB) count data models are applied to account for consumer surplus resulted from on site sampling. Visitors place a high price on beach trip to Koh Chang. Their average CS per visitor day measures $53.73 and $26.99 in the TP model while the TNB showed higher CS estimates which are $59.57 and $33.18 per visitor day for the Thai -residents and non-Thai residents, respectively. In summary, the TP results in the total social welfare estimate would be $436 million and $346 million for Thai-residents and non-residents while using the TNB, the social welfare will be probably $487 million and $425 million respectively. This study suggests that Ko Chang has an economic potential far greater than its realized economic earnings based on the from the waterfall entrance fee which is approximately $300,000 in 2012.
The important policy implications should focus on: i) to increase the level satisfaction of the visitors in term of coastal park utilizations (for example, expanded public toilet and sanitation, car parking, walk pathway, tourist signs and local facilities because these are major resources that attract more visitors revisit); (ii) to allocate funding for protecting beaches and coastal water quality, this is fact that visitors prefer clean and better beach quality which is attracted them for the next beach experiences. Importantly, as tourism generates additional income from travel demand to site,it will provide an incentive for the managements to preserve nature when park resource over uses. Thus, the basic waterfall entry fee per visitore per visit must be re-considered. Increasing entry fee by 5% probably would not decrease the number of travel trips to the Ko Chang. However, this minor increase in entry fee would generate more than $384,399 annually. Increased revenue ultimately would help the park managements to cover the operating and maintenance expenses of the park. My emial : Email Removed
