In “I’m not a racist, but…” Neil Bisoondath argues that racism exists everywhere and is denied throughout the world, and people of different cultures frequently use the term I’m not a racist, but… in order to justify a racial comment .

Bisoondath states that people often make racial comments based solely on ignorance and what they assume, not realizing it is discrimination. According to Bisoondath people make racial comments all the time without realizing it “I think of a mover, a friendly man, who said, I’m not a racist but the Chinese are the worst drivers on the road.”(pg.34) although this remark is not meant to be hurtful Bisoondath says it is still classified as discrimination. In following paragraphs, Bisoondath explains how he encountered other people who made racial comments and neither of these people thought of themselves as racist. Bisoondath also agrees that deep down the individuals he spoke to who made these racial comments are not racist, just uninformed and discourteous.

Bisoondath goes on to blame ignorance and the tolerance of stereotypes for the cause of existing racism. Bisoondath states that the root of racism comes from within an individual and is based on how we judge others.

Bisoondath concludes his essay forewarning society that racism exists for one ethnicity as much as it does for another and there should be no exceptions when it comes to color. Bisoondath expresses how remarks made by individuals and television shows isolating one specific culture in an attempt to avenge their ethnicity, only adds to discrimination. Most importantly Bisoondath advises society to be cautious of mistreating the term racist altogether.
