I need the right word

Question

Hello,I need the verb for an action i cannot name properly. I have come up with an example so that You could get a better picture. It is, for instance, when You (male) arm-wrestle with a lady and you let her win, or if You are much better at something but you want to make somebody happier and pretend to be worse than this person is. and let this person do better than you. Ok, then, What is the verb for it?At the start I thought it would be "give onself", but it has a sexual connotation. Any ideas are welcome.

I agree that "letting her win" describes the arm wrestling scenario well.  In general, you might describe this kind of behavior as "giving up the spotlight" or "letting them shine".

There's also the expression "to throw the game," which means to deliberately lose. I think you can also "throw" a fight. I'm pretty sure this carries the connotation of betting, e.g. the famous "Black Sox" scandal.
