What's the difference between saying:

Thanks, I need that! And Thanks, I needed that.

The first one means exactly what it says. The second is usually humorous, often sarcastic.

Eg, somebody slaps your face. Thanks. etc.

Your young kid is helping you wash the car, and accidentally soaks you with the hose. Thanks. etc.

Seems like it originated with a 1950's commercial for after shave lotion, or something like that.
