There is no question that crime rate has significantly increased over the past few years. However, there is a wide diversity of opinion on the best solution to reduce crime. Most people believe in the traditional solution which is prison sentences. An opposing opinion is expressed by a great number of experts. They think that in order to reduce crime rate we should be able to define and cure the main causes of committing a crime.
people who believe that prison sentence is the only and best solution to reduce crime often argue that a criminal is a person who commits a crime regardless their background education or their social statues. And there is nothing could justify any crime even poverty. People in favour of this opinion always give New York city as an example. New York is considered to be one of the richest cities on the world. Though, it has the highest crime rate ever.
On the other hand, some people believe that attacking the main causes of crime are the long-term solutions to reduce crime. They often argue that the circumstances surrounding criminals are usually one of the major reasons of committing crimes. Statistics showed that the rate of crime especially murder and theft are rapidly increasing in poor areas and between those with lack of education. Moreover, cutting down the major causes of the problem would not only help to reduce crime rate, governments would also be able to save a lot of money that is being wasted on building prisons.
In conclusion, fighting the main causes of crime can have an important role to reduce crime, but the government should keep in mind that without prison sentences and community work, re-offending rate might slightly increase.
