Adjectives modify nouns. Something happens to the noun. That action is expressed by a verb. I boil an egg. Somebody broke my nose.

Now we use that verb to describe the new condition. We use the participle form of the verb. Now I'm eating my boiled egg. I now have a broken nose. (Woops!)

The noun does something. That action is described by a verb. The wave breaks onto the beach.

Now we use the verb to describe the condition of the noun. I ride the breaking wave on my surf board.

This dog barks all the time. I don't like barking dogs!

I think I'm going to wreck my car! Nobody wants a wrecked car.
