00The giraffe, as we know the species today, did not always exist. Rather, it evolved as it was needed in the ecosystem. The ancestor of the giraffe probably was a much smaller animal with a very much shorter neck. From the dentition patterns of fossils we can assume that it was herbivorous like the present-day giraffe. In the past as the populations of small animal species grew they used up food plants near the ground. Shortage of low growing food increased the amount of competition for this resource. The ancestors of the giraffe knowing that this was occurring deliberately stretched their necks to reach leaves that were higher up. This longer neck was passed on to some of their offspring. Repeating this process generation after generation has finally resulted in the modern giraffe. 02br
