I Need help with my motivational letter for the LSE

Dear All,

i need some help for my motivational letter for the LSE. Does anyone have some experience with the LSE? Even if not than you so much for checking the expressions and the vocabular.

Thank you!

Dominik

My goal is to work in a leading position in the field between economics and politics. My aim is not to work in the private banking sector but in a public international institution like the IMF. I have come to the conclusion that your program will give me the best academic scientific qualification. Your well known university is leading in this field and the masters program financial mathematics is a very good basis in order to reach this goal.
In addition I am going to work on a PhD to combine my philosophical work, the foundations of values, with the nowadays relevant work of financial mathematics. Therefore I am applying to the London School of Economics. I think my natural and trained skills, my personality and my curiosity qualify myself for this program.
My curiosity has always been the main driver for my studies. To quote Goethe: So that I may perceive whatever holds The world together in its inmost folds. This might sound like an utter exaggeration but it expresses my eagerness to understand connections and correlations between different fields of science and life. I am not interested in just one field, my interest lies in the intersection of the fields. I have learned that having a broader view of a problem makes it easier to solve it. One can say that my academic interests is deducting values and therefore the condition of the possibility. My master thesis in philosophy was about the necessary conditions to interpret (moral) values ontologically realistic. These are not the values that I derived from axioms in my mathematical career so far. But in mathematics and furthermore in the financial mathematics values are derived from highly theoretical models to lead ones actions in the real world. Therefore one can say my main interest in science so far was to find an answer to the two questions What should one do? and How can I even find a satisfying answer to question one? In both metaethics and mathematics the Kantian approach of deriving values from rationality is the recurring theme. In the last two years my interests shifted from moral values to the field of trading and finance. I have become fascinated by the possibility of abstracting the complex reality by financial modelling. But one of my future goals certainly is to combine ethics and mathematics? I am convinced that there is a need for professionals who have the necessary technical tools to act in the world of finance but at the same time are able to reflect their decisions with respect to categories of right or wrong.
In Munich I am working voluntarily at a Project that supports socially disadvantaged children and young people. At my work and while backpacking off the beaten path the question of inequality and responsibility of the wealthy awoke. These questions I love to discuss with my colleagues from philosophy. During these discussion we bring up social theories and new political approaches. But now I want to not just discuss about social inequality. But what I would really like to do is actively engage in erasing some of the existing wrongs. This desire led me to the London School of Economics.
At the Munich School of Philosophy I completed both my bachelor and my master's#_ftn1 degree in philosophy. My major field of interest was modern metaphysics - a very formal and logical subject. My master thesis about the existence of values was graded with a first class honours degree (1.3). During my philosophical studies I realized that I need a deeper understanding in logic to follow some arguments. While I was still working on my masters degree in Philosophy, I enrolled in the bachelors program in Mathematics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. After graduating in Philosophy I studied Mathematics abroad at the University of Buenos Aires for half a year. I had some spanish courses at school but to study in this language I had to learn a lot of spanish in order to compete at the math courses. I am going to finish my bachelor`s degree in February. (Estimated lower first class to upper second class) In my bachelor thesis in financial mathematics I developped a model to estimate the credit risk for the entertainment fond where I have been employed for 4 years. I derived the value at risk with a stochastic approach and some relevant estimators. For my thesis I received a first class honours degree (1.0). It was fun developing my own model and see it working. Working for this film fond named “Silver Reel” during my studies, I learned how to act as a small player in a highly international field. I was able to contribute to the work of the fond with some financial mathematical techniques and to build up a database which facilitates the company's work flows.
My curriculum in financial mathematics fits the entry requirements. I attended two courses in financial mathematics in the summer term of 2013 and wrote my bachelor thesis in this field as mentioned above. One course was concerned with arbitrage theory in discrete time and risk measures, the second course dealt with modelling utility and preference functions. I am acquainted with the underlying concepts of stochastic and probability theory. Therefore, the following courses at LSE, such as stochastic processes and the theory of Black and Scholes, are the perfect addition to my present academical achievements. In Munich I liked the three courses in analysis as well as probability theory a lot, because of the broad variety to applicate the solutions in other subjects. But I also learned to love formal logic and its very abstract way to proof things, which is sometimes very enlightning and confusing at the same time.
I would feel honored to get the chance to take part in the MSc Financial Mathematics at your institute and to contribute my skills, intellectually as well as socially. I want to help shape the field of international financial politics and play a part in contributing to decisions that are ethically as well as socially and economically well-founded. To achieve this goal, I need the best education I can get and I am convinced that it is offered by your institute.

#_ftnref1In fact the title is magister, the old German equivalent to the master´s degree.
