This is actually not as difficult as it might seem to be. In any play the basic story is very simple, for example, in Hamlet: Hamlet's father is murdered by his brother, who then marries his widow, the ghost of Hamlet's father informs Hamlet of the murder, and then Hamlet kills his uncle. This basic story would not fill a page of text, and so much filler (basically meaningless and unnecessary chatter) has to be added in order to fill up 3 or 4 acts of a standard play.
