I need HELP!!! Problems with changes between past and continuous tense

hi! I'm still in middle school and I just had an editing test a few days ago but I have a few problems. Firstly, If the first sentence of a paragraph begins with the past tense and then turns to continuos tense, does it mean the next paragraph uses continuous tense if it talks about the same thing? e.g. The old man was well-known for his height, large-framed shoulders and his clothes. Every morning, he would repeat the same routine. He would amble through the door and...................................... (continues in the continuous tense)
(Next paragraph)(Talking about his routine) As he entered the building, he carefully took off his gloves and coat and carefully hung both up and finally sits down.
So is this correct? If not, will it be when I change the words "took" and "hung" to "takes" and "hangs"? I assumed this because of the presence of the word "sits" Is the paragraph already gramatically incorect beacause it is a kind of flashback? So am I correct? If not, plese explain to me which tense is definitely wrong if used in this instance.
Secondly, which is correct? waste-can or waste can? Or are they both correct? Explain pleease.......... Thanks for your help!

Hi David Unfortunately the quote option doesn't work properly if I add my comments and change the colour of my text, so I'll post my comments without quoting anything. I don't quite understand what you mean with regard to your first sentence, or sentences, actually. " is in the past tense and "would" can be considered the past tense of "will" and thus fits the sentence very well.

  • There is nothing in a continuous tense in these sentences, so I can't figure out how the story could go on in a continuous tense all of a sudden.
  • In the next paragrahp, change "sits" to "sat" as "sits" is a present tense and all the other verbs in the sentence are in the past tense.
