Greetings, forum user. I need help to understand these paragraphs. For those who are good in understand in English and writers out there. Please help.
This is from the same essay "Why First night seems like last night" by Cornelia Otis Skinner. This is about a stage fright of an actress who will play her lead role for the first time. This is the paragraph I can't understand. (Paragraph 14-15)
"As the starting date of rehearsal approaches, the nightmare repeat themselves with increasing frequency until the eve of the initial reading when you dream not at all because, as a rule, you sleep not at all. This means that next morning, with raddled face and halting gait, you slink onto the bare stage of an empty theatre to confront for the first time a brand new cast, crew, and director in the white, unshaded glare of the work of the lights. This is an illumination as a relentless as that of the morning lineup at police headquarters; it would reduce the appearance of the prettiest starlet to that of an elderly character woman.
You try to assume a charming manner, bare your teeth w/ everyone in what you hope is a dazzling smile and settle with as much as willowy grace as is possible onto a rehearsal chair, which is the wooden kitchen variety and often as not has lost its back. You feel that the other members of the company are wondering why the management dug up this old hag for leading part and you note the speculative eye of your understudy."
Please help me. The line I can't understand is the2 last sentence of the first paragraph and if you could please tell me your understanding in the second paragraph especially the last sentence where she says "speculative eye of your understudy." I have 3 more paragraphs left. I will post it in the next thread. Thank you so much.
