Topic: As well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities. To what extent do you agree and disagree?
In the present age, public are raising a question about social obligations in business organisations:” Do they have reponsibilities to the society beside making profits?”. From my perspective, I agree that paying attention to the communities is even more important than generating profits.
Concerning about the social responsibilities is one of the principles of business ethics which can help the organisations avoid the potential crisis. A crisis often ocurs when a business does not follow those principles. It could create bad images and receive criticisms from the public. Consequently, the standing of the company will go down and suffer from a loss. For example, years ago in Vietnam, a company called Vedan eliminated a huge amount of toxic waste directly to the river for a long period which caused a great damage to the environment. This action was detected by the citizens and received boycott from the community and punishment from the government which lead to default lately.
Besides, thinking about social obligations as a mean of improving reputation is a good stategy. There is no easier way in reaching to the top of the customers’ choices of brands than creating good images in their minds. For instance, companies could spend a percentage of their profit supporting the local charities, environmental projects, or educational programs. As a result, they not only create a better image towards the citizenry but also increase their brands recognition amongst publics.
For the reasons mentioned above, I believe that companies should consider the importance of the social obligations as well as reaching a financial goal.
