Mariam Niare was my best professor ever. She was an amazing teacher in Mama Thiam (Bamako, Mali) who changed my whole life. My fourth grade instructor inspired me a lot. I remember every single thing she taught me in fourth grade, and I have continued to follow her advice throughout my life. This extraordinary teacher showed me the importance of hard work, self-discipline, and above all, being fair. My fourth grade teacher taught me the meaning of hard work. First of all, Mariam encouraged me by her example. She was always on time. She was an organized professor and was exactly aware of the course materials. She gave us quizzes every morning and corrected them by the next class. When she returned our corrected quizzes, she went through every single mistake we made and explained it clearly to make us understood it. She punished students who did not do their assignments by giving them double assignments. She encouraged us to be open-minded and ask questions when we did not understand something. She always rewarded students who studied hard with gifts. For me, the word “perfect” is just accorded to God; however, Mariam Niare was an impeccable instructor who by her hard work will always remain in my mind because she is the one who inspired me to be a hard worker. Besides that, Mariam was a very self-disciplined professor. She did not let anything distract her. She was her own woman. She kept her phone silent and did not respond to any call during the class period. For instance, one day her daughter had a motorcycle accident while she was in class, but she did not leave the class for that. Her phone was on silent, and she did not know about the accident. However, there was another of her daughters in our class who received a text on her phone, and, as soon as she read it, she interrupted her mother’s lecture and informed her. Surprisingly, Mariam did not panic and just asked her daughter, “How is she?” Her daughter responded, “Fine, but she is in the hospital,” so Mariam continued her lecture. This action touched me a lot, so I could not resist asking her if she was going to go to the hospital. She just responded “No,” and I said automatically, “Why?” She said,” It is not more an emergency; she is fine and in the hospital; whether I go or not, I cannot make any change in situation. All of you are paying me to teach you, so that is my job, and I cannot let personal problems interfere with my job.” At that point, I just thought, “Wow! This woman merits some applause.” I have never ever seen someone like her; her self-discipline was just on the top of all my expectations. This day made me understand the real meaning of self-discipline because I was fascinated by a model who did not stop impressing me. This same teacher encouraged me to be a fair person in life. She was the best example of fairness. She considered all students equal, even her own daughter. We were all encouraged or punished for the same reasons. She pushed us to study hard for our quizzes and exams and did not do a make-up test for any of us. For her daughter, her mother being the professor gave her the right to misbehave in class without consequences, so her mother show her the opposite. One day, Mariam asked us to do a classwork and put us in different groups. Her daughter (Marie) and I were in the same group. While we all were participating in the classwork, Marie was texting in class instead of participating in-group works. When her mom saw her, she asked her to live the class. Another day, Marie daughter did something wrong in class and got punish for it. She disturbed the class during by talking to a friend and not following the lecture. Then her Mother asked her to be quite and also punished her in the next class period in front of all her classmates. She was so embarrassed that she never repeated what she had done. My professor inspired me to be fair with everybody and not make an exception for anyone, even if this person was a relative. Definitely Mariam Niare is the person who inspired me the most. In addition to being a good instructor, she had an incredible personality, which made her exceptional. She is my model, my inspiration and my most loved person in the world. My elite teacher, Mariam Niare, is the one who shaped my values.
