Syria's Civil War
The country of Syria is in the middle of a nationwide civil war. Syria's people began their up rising against the Syrian government earlier this year. Fawaz Gerges; a reporter for the British Broadcasting Company, published an article titled “Syria set for drawn-out conflict.” In this article Mr. Gerges points out different reasons why this civil war will be long and filled with bloodshed on all sides. He points out that despite the Syrian army's dominance, the army is spread across the country very thin. This is one of the main reasons the rebels are able to battle the army with some success. He also points to outside influences from different governments that are aiding the rebels with hope of overthrowing the present regime that has been ruling over Syria for the last forty years.
While the Syrian civil war drags on, some people think that even if the current regime is overthrown, Syria's civil war will continue on. According to Jim Michaels; a reporter for the USA Today. Published an article titled “Syrian civil war could persist post Assad.” In this article Mr. Michaels gives many reasons why Syria's civil war will never end. He points out that even if the Syrian rebels overthrow the Assad regime, Syria will have a difficult time proving to the people that the new government is trustworthy. He also states that Syria civil war is in the middle of a deadlock, and it might take outside intervention for something major to happen.
Noticing all the uprising against government taking place across the middle east, this topic becomes such an interesting story. This gives me a chance to read and form my own opinion on real life events and history that's happening right before my eyes. This also gives me a chance to educate others in the future about what happened in my past that I experienced. We all must be knowledgeable about our past in able to proceed with our present and plan for our future.
While reading these articles, I couldn’t help but relate them to the facts I obtained from “Making Europe; People, Politics, and Culture, 1st ed. Vol.1.” The books author's are Frank Kinder, Maria Bucur, Ralph Mathisen, Sally McKee, and Theodore R. Weeks. In this book they recall the events of the Assyrian's of old. While this civil war for the modern day Syria lingers on I recall facts stated in “Making Europe; People, Politics, and Culture,” from the 620's b.c.e when the Assyrian nation rebelled against their government. The Assyrian's cited they disapproved of the way their government governed. The government never trusted its own people, so they ruled the Assyrian citizens with an iron fist. This caused the Assyrian's to rebel. Presently, the people are fighting for change citing, they don't trust the current regime that has been governing for the last forty years.
While we as a nation watch and observe Syria's civil war, we all should look closely and pay attention. We have to examine at the way we govern ourselves and others. We live in a democratic republic, and instead of electing officials through a popularity contest, we need to listen closely to what they offer. If we don’t, we might elect the incompetent leader and we ourselves might have to rebel and fight for our civil liberties.
