I need help

Hi, I need help,please. Can you read this sentence an tell me if you understand it? I'm trying to translate something from Serbian to English, but I'm not sure is it understandable in English,so I am asking you, as I supose, native speakers, to help me with it. The sentence is:

It was not easy to lead a country like his. In order to numerous and multilingual smaller cities, which were put under the protection of his powerful army that was under the command of his eldest son, remain faithful to this city, he had to have great diplomatic skills, wisdom, tolerance and, sometimes, shrewdness.
