Hi,

so a present tense must follow the did right ? No. An infinitive must follow the 'did'.

eg Mary did cook dinner.

eg Mary did not cook dinner.

'Cook' is the infinitive form of the verb. It is not the Present Tense, although the Present Tense form often looks the same.

hi clive.

i thought a infinitive is to + verb, no ? So what is it then, please explain.

Clive is correct.

Here is the dictionary definition:
infinitive

(in English) the simple or basic form of the verb, as come, take, eat, be, used after auxiliary verbs, as in I didn't come, He must be, or this simple form preceded by a function word, as to in I want to eat.

To is called an "infinitive marker"
