student revolts are social or political protests by student groups. Students have played an important part in almost every major revolution of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the early 19th century, the German universities produced student movements (Burschenschaften) supporting German nationalism and opposing the rule of METTERNICH. In Tsarist Russia students who agitated for liberal reforms were imprisoned, exiled, or executed. In the period between the two World Wars the universities in Germany and Japan had movements supporting mainly right-wing causes and revolutions. After World War II universities in the developing countries often fostered strong nationalist and Marxist movements, while in the 1960s left-wing movements were predominant in many universities and colleges in Europe, the USA, and Japan. The protests at the University of California's Berkeley campus (1964) and the nationwide strike at approximately 200 US campuses (1970) challenged US policy in Vietnam. In Paris, French students and workers joined in the movement (1968) to challenge the DE GAULLE regime, while in Japan students acted militantly against the westernization of Japanese society.

Demonstrations by South Korean university students (1987) led to constitutional amendments and the release of political prisoners. Pro-democracy student rallies and hunger strikes in Beijing in 1989 were brutally suppressed by government forces in the Tiananmen Square massacre, which left an estimated 2600 dead and led to the arrest and execution of hundreds more. A series of student demonstrations in Prague in 1989 gained widespread support that led to the downfall of the Czechoslovak communist regime.

Following the explosion in student numbers in previous decades without a corresponding transformation of the university system, and agitated (as students elsewhere) by the Vietnam War and political stagnation at home, students of Paris University first took to the streets at Nanterre in March 1968, in response to the arrest of a Nanterre student for his participation in bombings of US targets. After further protests the campus at Nanterre was closed on 3 May , and to cope with the spread of the unrest, classes were suspended at the Sorbonne while the police brutally suppressed student demonstrations. Across the country, there were demands by workers for participation in the demonstrations, though only in Nantes was a central strike committee actually formed which became the de facto city government for a week. Professionals moved against their antiquated organizations, and artists complained about state participation in (and censorship of) the arts. On 29 May , de Gaulle left the country, but he returned on 30 May and broadcast a defiant message which proved a decisive turning point. He dissolved the National Assembly and called new elections, in which the Gaullists won an overwhelming majority. Mollified by significant pay increases, the workers withdrew their support, and the students became increasingly marginalized. Since the revolt was not supported by the one French revolutionary party, the Communist Party, it is doubtful whether the May events ever had the potential to escalate into a revolution. Moreover, student revolts in other countries such as Germany and Mexico appeared similarly threatening when they occurred, but all were ultimately contained; yet the sense of fundamental crisis generated by them was real enough.
