Some educationalists argue that non-exam, arts-base subjects such as music, drama. Art and craft should be compulsory in the secondary-school curriculum. They believe these activities can improve overall academic performances. Do you agree or disagree?
The question of either non-exam subjects such as music, drama, art, and craft should be set mandatory in the secondary-school system or not has been receiving a great deal of attention from educationalists. While some people believe that they are simply a form of creative relaxation, I believe that students could gain some benefits from those activities.
On the one hand, there are a number of advantages as non-exam subjects become compulsory. Firstly, students enrolling in drama classes could be taught to work as a team with each other. Drama requires those students to take a role in a scenario, and they have to take part in rehearsal so that it fosters the sense of group working. Secondly, after the nerve-cracking time of academic subjects, teenagers may make use of music and craft for relaxation. Furthermore, activities in music, craft prevent students from the binge-watching TV show or web drama which are believed to enhance sedentary lifestyle.
On the other hand, several drawbacks should not be overlooked. The general view has been that since not all the students were born with the innate ability of drawing or singing, they may find it struggling to accomplish the tasks in non-exam subjects. Obviously, those ones without particular talents tend to focus on exam subjects such as Maths or Physics as they find them as areas of interest. On top of that, it is inevitable that drawing could take up a large amount of time even with students who are good at it. For instance, in order to fulfill the school tasks such as homework and preview lesson, students in Vietnam have to spend a high proportion of time on them and they could not allocate time for subjects which are not considered as important as academic subjects.
In conclusion, with the pros and cons mentioned above. I believe that non-exam disciplines play a vital role in students’ learning; however, educationalists should take into account that those classes would rather be set as active extra curriculum classes than mandatory ones.
