I need a native's help

Hi,

I am a translator I faced this sentence:

This book also isn't about our "emotional self" and our "rational self,"
or about the difference between "affect" and "cognition." It's not about our
right brain and our left brain. It's not about the duality of man, the duality of
woman, or the triality of Freud's id, ego, and superego. As we'll see, cutting
up the brain into such a small number of parts undersells, by a fair amount,
just how complicated things are

My question is about the last one that is:As we'll see, cutting
up the brain into such a small number of parts undersells, by a fair amount,
just how complicated things are

Can you explain to me? What I understand is that if you divide the brain into such small parts, (small numbers than it should be)

you can dismiss its complexity? Same?

Top answer

divide the brain into such small parts (very many small parts) and divide the brain into such a small number of parts (very few big parts) are completely different concepts, so be careful about that. The part in bold says that if you only look at the brain in terms of a few big parts, you "can dismiss its complexity", as you say. CJ
