Maua, an avant-garde in its time, daring in his struggle for the industrialization of Brazil, was received with red carpet, and kicked the back door by D. Pedro II, the then emperor of Brazil. Irineu had the ambition of modernising the country despite the many obstacles that he would face (unimaginable ones). Actually, he would end up being harmed not only by foreigners, but also by his own people; the Brazilians who belonged to an oligarchy who was interested in their own benefit. An entrepreneur, industry man, banker, politician.; to watch Baron of Maua building his empire, seeing its collapse and still show what it is to be proud for being Brazilian, through a national production of such outstanding quality is at least, stunning. Consequently, the book is comprised and the film might not be so consistent, anyway, the budget does not help any improvement. All in all, Mauá is an exceptional and fine film with an excellent and talented cast.
