"I make him sound." how do you interpret this sentence?!

"He may have not been so blunt as I make him sound, but that's the message I got."
Does this sentence natural?
If it sounds natural and is a grammatically correct sentence, what does it mean?
To me, "I make him sound," doesn't sound quite right and seems to need an adjective.
