I love you too vs. I love you also

When returning the sentiment, I say to my husband, "I love you too". He tells me this is a colloquialism and the gramatically correct response should be "I love you also".

Perhaps he's right, but when I hear "I love you also", my interpretation is, I love you and I love another as well.

What is the textbook ruling on this?

I love you too = I also love you. To native ears, "I love you also" is simply weird. It is unlike Spanish where the adverb "tambien", spanish equivalent of "too" and "also" falls after the verb.
