Which is correct?

1. I live in a house on Pateur street.

2. I live on Pasteur street in a house.

Generally, in the street is regarded as being BrE and on the street as AmE.

On the other hand, I've heard that Americans actually use both with two separate meanings (on the street such as in "a house on Park Lane" and in the street meaning exactly on the actual street/road itself, i.e. not lining the street like buildings). I don't know how true this
