I like winter BEST?

Hello

I often see "I like something best." Is this grammatically correct?

I think it should be "I like something most."

Thanks for help.

Most is only rarely used to indicate best. Usually it is quanity. He made the most (greatest amount) effort, but did not have the best outcome.

You can like something more or like it better.
You can like something most or like it best.

It doesn't really matter with the verb like.

It might help to think of this usage of better/best as somewhat idiomatic. Compare these sentences:

"I ran today's race better than I ran yesterday's." In this case, it means that my running was better; more skilled or of a higher quality.

"I like John better than I like Bob." This does not mean that my liking of John is superior or more proficient

Thanks for reply.

So, I guess, "I like it better" "I like it best" are all correct.

How about "I like it good" Is this correct too?

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, there is a break in the symmetry there, and I like it goodis not used.

Hi Cj,

I am wondering...Is there any idomatic force at work here? It seems like I've encountered more "love most" and "like best" than "love best" and "like most"; or is it my hullicination?

You are probably not hallucinating. Your observations seem reasonable to me, although the combination "like most" seems fine to my ear. Each speaker finds himself in a different language community, so what is common in one place may be less usual in another.
