I learn/ I'm learning

I am tutoring someone in english and I'm looking for a good way to explain why he cant say "now I learning english." my ear knows to change "I" to "I am" but only because I have been speaking English my entire life. Does anyone know a good way to explain this? is there a rule here?

thank you
