Could you please tell me if the following sentence is natural, especially the yellow parts? Any suggestion is welcome.

I lay in bed thinking in retrospect about all the past events one by one, and soon my doubts about the flaws in her character confirmed themselves.

One more question: can I use "thinking in retrospect" and "doubts...confirm themselves" the same way in other places also? For example, do you find these natural too?

Only when I thought in retrospect, did I realize how foolish I'd been all the while.

I hope my doubts about what she has done never confirm themselve
