From 1985->1990, the berry production of bush xx increased by 20%. From 1990->95, the berry production increased by 30. What was the percent increase in the berry production on the bush over the entire 10-year period from 85-95?

Do the question without using the number subtitute skill or anything, just use the arithmetic way

Here was my take:

20+20*30%=26%.

But the answer turned out to be wrong. What was wrong with it? And what is the correct answer? (Please do it slowly and explain it carefully in case I'm lost)

I'm assuming you meant 30 percent.
Suppose you started with 100. A 20% increase adds 20 to the 100.

Now you have 120. A 30% increase adds 36 to the 120.
Now you have 156. This is a 56% increase relative to the original 100.
56% should be the answer.

In algebraic terms: 1 + (.2)(1) + (.3)[1+(.2)(1)] = 1.56
or X + .2X + .3(X+.2X) = X +.2X + .3X+ .06X = 1.56X

You're adding 30% of the increment, but not adding 30% of the original amount, so you are 30% lower than the correct answer.
If you don't understand the explanation I gave, then you should get onto a math forum and have them explain it further.
