Perhaps whoever told you it's wrong is thinking that it's not the van, but the DRIVER of the van, who was pulled over. But I agree with Clive -- this seems fine to me. Native speakers will talk about an object as representing the person associated with it all the time.

Edit -- Oh, I see. It's a PUN. A "pull-over" is type of sweater.
